It's pretty obvious that didn't happen. There were two little curveballs threw us- one great, one not so much.

We closed on our house in early June, and were taking our time moving. We were waiting on some new furniture, slowing sorting and packing up our old house. And then the derecho hit.

It blew in all the west-facing windows at our old house, and caused all kinds of damage. We had a tree in our family room, and the entire house was soaked and full of pine needles. We moved that night.

It was a horrible, horrible experience, and I was so grateful we had somewhere to go. My brother went to Lowes to get us a generator, my husband left to take care of people who needed help, and the boys and I went to WalMart to buy pillows, some clothes and enough food and drinks to get us through the night.

I'm not going to bore you with details, but I will tell you the gentle transition to our new home didn't happen, and it took months to get settled. I'm sure you're wondering how our house fared. Well, these were our neighbor's houses:

Note the blue tarps. Our house:

No tarp. The only damage we had was on the west side siding. Considering those winds snapped trees in half and blew apart entire barns, I'll take it. Wayne Homes came out and fixed the siding, even though it wasn't their responsibility.

I hadn't thought about that storm in a long time. Time to move on...
Everything has been done.

It feels a little weird.

Yesterday morning we closed on our house.

Kasey came over bright and early to do the final walk through with us. We went through all of the warranties, mechanicals, the particulars of the plumbing, furnace and electrical system. We discussed ways to clean things, preventative measures and possible updates in the future. He gave us a big folder with all of the papers we might need for everything in the house. It's all tabbed- divided by category. We also got a magnet as a reminder of what kind of home maintenance items should be done with each season. And finally, on a nifty little house key chain, we got our keys.

Now that the building portion of our journey is over, I can honestly say that working with Kasey was a pleasure. He always kept us informed with everything that was going on. Our build was very fast, and overall the process was very smooth. If there was a problem, he always addressed it right away. I never felt like I was disturbing him or that we were anything less than his most important client.

The build is done, but that doesn't mean that I'm done with this blog. When I have some time there a few more things I'd like to write about. And, of course, I'll keep you updated on anything I think you would find useful.

If you've been following along, thanks. It's been fun.

Over the past week we've been moving in a little. The appliances were delivered June 1. It POURED all morning long which meant the truck couldn't pull around to the back. Where the French door is. It's the only door wide enough for our refrigerator. So for now the fridge is in the garage. As soon as the ground can hold a truck we'll move it ourselves.

The oven is ready to be installed as soon as we buy a cord.

To install the microwave we need to drill a hole in the cabinet so we can plug it in.

The washer and dryer are ready to be installed, once a gas line is put in.
Yep- no gas line for the dryer. Electric is standard, so I guess it was overlooked.

That's one of those things you don't notice until you need it.

To recap, we have several fabulous appliances, yet can't install any of them.

The last time I updated I told you about painting and The Ceiling Issue. We had gone around the house with a pad of post-it notes to mark spots that needed to be cleaned up. You can see them in several of the photos from the last entry. There were some spots that needed sanded down, some brush strokes above doorways, spots that had gotten dinged somewhere along the way. The painters came back in and touched up everything.

The closet guy also came in to fix the utility closet (in the little hall outside the master bedroom). We had requested that this one have half shelves and half hanging rod, but he had only installed the hanging rod. As a coat closet it would be perfect, but I want to use the space for brooms, vacuum, garbage bags, batteries, cleaning stuff. He came back and added three shelves and left another for us if we wanted to put it in either below or above the others. Right now I like having a larger space along the bottom, but it's nice to have the option. Sorry for the horrid picture, but because of the space it's impossible to get a good angle.

And now The Ceiling Issue. In a nutshell, you could see the drywall seams because the texture was different in those areas. Apparently the plaster absorbed into the mud faster than into the plain drywall. Kasey brought it to our attention, which I give him a lot of credit for, because neither B nor I noticed. This isn't the greatest picture, but you can see the seams. This was taken in full sun, which it when it looked the worst.

The first thing Kasey tried was sanding down the seams and painting the whole ceiling. It was better, but still too many visible. So the only thing to do was to sand down the entire ceiling and redo it. The whole process took two days. They covered everything up with plastic to minimize the mess, which I'm sure was considerable. I didn't even go to the house while they were working on it, but J said it looked like the scene from ET. If you have no idea what I'm talking about you need to go rent ET right now. I'll wait.

The night they finished I went in to look and almost cried, because EVERY seam was visible. Kasey talked me off the ledge and said to go back the next day when it had a chance to dry. I did, and it was a LOT better. Over the next few days it kept improving, and now there's only one spot that I notice, but I'm sure no one else ever would. It's like telling you to NOT think about an elephant, then that's all you can think about. That one spot is noticeable to me, but only because I know it's there. At any rate, we're happy with the way the ceiling looks now. None of my after pictures are very good, so I'll keep trying.

The whole ceiling thing took place over the last week 2 weeks of May. Over Memorial Day weekend we went to Ikea. Here's a preview of that action:

So feel free to skip. I won't hold it against you.

B and I last bought a couch the year we were married, and it has served us well. But after 12+ years it's looking pretty rough, and would look absolutely awful in the new house. We also need a new bed, the boys need new beds, another table...the list goes on. Our furniture budget is about thisbig. So on what was probably the hottest Memorial Day weekend EVER we decided to go to Ikea to pick up a couch or two.

I did a lot of homework before we settled on Ikea. I read reviews, message boards, and several blogs of Ikea couch owners who were very pleased, loved the slipcovers, and told tales of couches standing up to small children. That's no mean feat. After talking to two friends who have the sofa we wanted, we settled on the Ektorp. Two, actually, because two sofas are more versatile than one sectional, which is what we currently have. Also, this way we can split them up in the future.

Not only did we get our two sofas, we also got a futon and ottoman for the basement from Garden Ridge. I also scored lots of stuff for the kitchen including plate racks (for the drawers in the island), cutlery tray and knife rack, and a colander that fits over our sink.

Even though it was HOT, we timed this trip really well, because Ikea was offering 15% of any sofa purchase back on a gift card. The sofas were only $399 to begin with, and we got back $120 on a gift card. Can't beat that!

Now, there are still some things that need to be taken care of, but the house is inhabitable. Over the past few days the septic system was completed. While I do have pictures of the process they're not very exciting. Versus these, which are very exciting in showing the giant dirt patch that is our front yard. This is the view of the leach field from the front porch. It's 150 feet long by 50 feet wide. The septic tank is buried behind that in the back yard.

The view from the road. Seriously- the leach field is huge. And the yard looks entirely too big. Thank goodness the boys are getting old enough to mow!

Like I said- ready. But not really. Over the weekend we went through the house with post-it notes to mark anything that needed to be corrected/fixed. We knew there was going to be touch-up work with the paint, so most of them are paint issues. However, (there's always a however) there is one kind of major issue.

Last Friday Kasey called to update us on what was going on. He told us he wasn't happy with the ceiling- if you really look at it you can see the seams in the drywall. The mud absorbed the water in the plaster faster than the drywall sheets so it's uneven. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. He discussed a few options to fix it and told us to check it out over the weekend as we were post-it-ing (Remember- my blog, my words.).

After really looking at the ceiling I could see what he was talking about. It's not obvious, but once I saw it it was all I noticed. In the smaller rooms you can't see it, but the lines are apparent with the longer stretches in the entry and kitchen/family room. There are a few things they're going to try, but it it comes down to it they'll scrape off all the plaster and start over. I'll keep you posted.

To end on a high note, here are some additional shots.
This weekend we went through the house with a packet of post-it notes to mark spots that needed touching up. A friend walked through with me so I could have a fresh pair of eyes looking also. I'm sure the painters are going to love me!

I also figured out where the electricians are to put the floor outlet, and I finished up the lights. After seeing them all over Pinterest and the blogosphere I decided to paint a chandelier for the dining room. I found this at a garage sale for $10. The seller wanted $15, but I drive a hard bargain. This is our big brass lovely the day we bought it.

Today I finally had the time to break out the paint. Not the clever use of a shepherd's hook! And yes, that's a farm wagon in the background. There's a John Deere tractor behind that. One thing I'm really looking forward to at the new house is a farming implement-free yard. Anyway...

I think I'll give it one more coat, maybe a matte protective coat. And then I need to work on the covers, which are pretty unique.

I've never seen ones that have the cap on the top and bottom.

Here's an interesting little fun fact: I found an identical painted chandelier on Etsy for $295. If any of you would like to pay me anywhere near that I'll come hang it in your house myself.

$295? People amaze me.
OhioMagshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653067004472617944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336336592696781619.post-78746009829618083192012-05-18T20:20:00.002-07:002012-05-18T20:20:45.282-07:00Great Way to End the WeekThis was a fine day, indeed. There's a very real possibility that the house will be complete by the end of next week. Now there's getting ready for the move. Going to be an interesting summer!

When we picked it I was a little concerned it might be too dark, but I think it looks really good so far. The house really does get quite a bit of natural light, which helps. Okay, the pic on the right isn't light, but it was also with no flash.

We carried it all through the hallways, but went for a lighter look in the boys' bathroom. To be honest I have no idea what we picked for our bathroom or the laundry. I'm guessing that one's kind of dark to help hide whatever the boys drag in. Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow!
In other news,no closets yet. But I finally got through to the septic installer! He was a day away from being replaced. They're supposed to be here either Friday or Monday. In theory the septic system will be in by the end of next week. Here's hoping!

I also wanted to talk about the pantry. Yes, it is hinged on the left side, so the door swings toward the kitchen instead of away, which would make more sense. I figured it was one of those things we overlooked during the planning, and it wouldn't be that big a deal. If it drove me crazy I'd just have B change it. He would be thrilled.

Anyway, I looked at our blueprints, and it shows door opening the correct way. So I texted Kasey, who said he'd look into it and get back to me. He checked the blueprints we signed off on, which were different than the prints we had. All I can figure is that when the final prints were drawn up that was switched. We did flip the floor plan, so I see how it could happen. When we did the final approval we missed it. But Kasey is going to fix it, even though we signed off on it. This is just another example of the outstanding customer service we've had with WH.
Apparently the finish carpenters were in, because the incorrect cabinet above the refrigerator was taken down. Once that's replaced they'll add the crown molding around the cabinets.

No closets again today. The good thing is you can see that the insides were painted a nice ivory color. At some point I'm going to paint the coat closet green, but this will do nicely for all the others.

I touched up the one spot I missed in the laundry room. If the photo above were a little closer you'd see it at the bottom of the short wall. I also cleaned off the island. By cleaning I mean I put all of the manuals and extra screws, etc. in one of the island drawers. That totally counts. The extra lights are in the van, waiting to be returned. And, as promised, the under cabinet lights we used are these.OhioMagshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653067004472617944noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336336592696781619.post-54368873567666036062012-05-11T19:53:00.003-07:002012-05-13T06:03:21.582-07:00Seeing GreenWell, the closet guy didn't show, but the electricians did. I under bought light bulbs and over bought the under cabinet lights, but everything got installed. Just so you don't make the same mistake I did, these are Xenon, which our electrician recommended. I had such a hard time finding lights that could be hardwired, not plugged in. These particular lights, found at Lowe's, could go either way, which is a good thing as I have one little sections between the fridge & pantry I thought wouldn't need light. If I change my mind I'll just buy one to plug in. All of the packaging is at the house so I'm not sure of the brand, but I'll add a link soon.
We added an outlet to the end of the island, which will make it a lot more functional. I need to do something about that bright white cover, though. Please excuse the mess on the island. Those are my lighting leftovers. You can also see the underlayment all over the floor. Maybe this means flooring is next?
At some point the plumbers were in, because the kitchen faucet was installed. I lucked into this ORB model on clearance at Menards for around $50. I'm keeping an eye out for bathroom faucets so I can eventually replace those with ORB also.

A note about the painting: It was a complete pain. 9 foot ceilings are a great idea until you need to paint those tall walls. And, in true procrastinator fashion, I didn't start until the boys went to bed (they wanted to "help") which was around 9. It took long enough that I had no desire to touch the closets. B will be happy about that.

Honestly, the whole process wasn't that bad, but made me glad I had our painters tackle the rest of the house. I had shoulder surgery a year ago and it never occurred to me that all that rolling and brushing might not be the best idea. This morning I could barely move my arm. As a result I'll find someone to paint the boys' bathroom. The good news is that I really like the green. Since the room doesn't have a window I wanted something bright and cheery. Check and check.

Am extremely tired, so this may not make much sense. You've been warned. =0)

The painters were supposed to be at the house M-W, but finished up T, so I wasn't expecting much of anything Wednesday. I figured I'd have plenty of time to paint the laundry room and possibly the boys' bathroom. Neither of those things happened. I got a call bright and early from B that the electricians were at the house and needed the light fixtures, which we had stashed in our garage, mudroom, and even in the back of one of our cars. There were a lot of boxes. So I made a mad dash to load them all up, drive them down, unload and explain what went where.

In the quest for under-cabinet lighting I had asked two different Menards employees what I should get. They told me different things, so I bought two complete sets of lighting. According to my electrician neither was correct, so off to Menards I went. Then Lowes, who actually had what I needed. By the time I got back in the afternoon the electricians had the fans and all of the lighting that I had ready installed. Whatever I don't have by Friday B can install. It pays to have a handy husband!

These are the island lights. I think I told you before that I found these at Lowes for $9. It was a ridiculous clearance deal. I have the coordinating chandelier ($14) ready for the dinette when we figure out where we want it.

Grey is hard to photograph, especially with cloudy skies. While the photo isn't bad, in real life it looks very nice- grey with a blue cast to it. Looking at it I probably could have gone a shade or two darker, but this is very soft, and I think it'll look very nice against the blue.
The painters also stained the banister and handrail. I'm sure that dark color was hard to match, but it does look similar to the cabinets.

Other than those two very noticeable things, all of the trim was finished up. I took photos, but the white against white just isn't very dramatic. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some more pics to show you!

We had a First Communion celebration most of the day yesterday, so didn't get to the house until 3:30 or so. There was a truck in the driveway, and I was shocked that the painters were still there. Well, it wasn't the painters. It was someone who thought the open house was Saturday, not Sunday. Since I was there anyway I walked him through the house and we chatted for quite a while.

While we were looking around I noticed the painters had painted the boys' rooms and the hallway. It looks great, and I'm very pleased with the color. Here's a sneak peek:

And yes, it's beige. However, M wants a camouflage room like this (he's getting one wall):

and J wants a hunting/fishing theme room, so beige is a good jumping off point for both of these.

All of the doors were put back up and more of the trim is done. The stairs are completely taped off, ready for staining. The paint for the LR and DR is in the basement, ready to go. According to Kasey the painters will be done by Wednesday!

The open house was scheduled today from 1 - 4. Around noon M and I were in town and I called B to see if he needed anything. I asked where J was, and he said he was at the new house because people were already there! Apparently J was quite the little tour guide. M and I got home around 12:15, and I stuck around to talk to people until Kim got there. After she did I stayed to answer any questions. J enjoyed keeping a running total of how many cars came, and was thrilled that "we won." Kim said we had a great turnout, so I hope it was helpful for the people who came.

(I was amazed at how many people have read this blog! So thank you guys for coming and all the very nice things you said!)

There was a comment last week asking what we got out of letting WH have an open house. Simply put- nothing. However, when we were looking at different models, I really appreciated being able to go through the physical space and seeing things for myself. I never talked with any homeowners while we were looking, but I would have appreciated that, too. By detailing this process on here and putting it all out there, I'm paying it forward to those who are in the same position we were.
You know I wasn't 100% sold on the color I picked, but there just wasn't a large selection. Well, the painters came today to start painting the trim and doors, so I again spoke with C. I'm going with a SW blue color-matched to the other line. Normally I'm not a fan of color matching, but C guaranteed the color so I'm okay with it. I don't know how well the photos translate, but the color is Honest Blue. It's smokier, a lot lighter (but not so light that it'll be washed out) and much more versatile.

The painters worked on the doors and trim, and started wrapping the spindles on the banister. I hope this means they're staining it tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it turns out! They'll be back tomorrow, to finish up and possibly paint a room or two. Stay tuned!
It rained last night and was supposed to rain today, so B added a pipe to the sump pump pipe and hooked up the downspout extenders. I'm sure they have a technical name, but they're the things that direct water away from the foundation. I was one short, so he used a board as a temporary measure. Off to Menards yet again!
The giant island was a happy accident. Originally it was going to be 2 large sets of drawers. However, the electrician needed a regular cabinet on the end to install the electrical box for the outlet. I like symmetry, so I added one to each end. The result is 8 feet of drawer-filled cabnity, countery goodness!

Also fueling the love is my beautiful Ikea farmhouse sink! I have loved this sink since I saw it on my very first trip to Ikea, and knew someday I would have it. And yes, I realize how abnormal it is to be this attached to a sink, but I really don't care. That is how much I love it! The carpenters did a great job with the installation, which I'm sure was a complete pain. It takes 2 people to move, and there's a lot of dry fitting to do with the installation, so our carpenters got a workout!

.....Who did he think he was kidding? I noticed right away that the space for the fridge was very small. The cabinets for the top are the wrong size. A (shorter) friend came over last night to see everything and didn't even notice. I think I did because I'm tall and know where our fridge hits me now. Anyway, they're going to leave the cabinets up through the open house on Sunday then fix it.

The painters came in Saturday to prime the walls. I've told you before that I have no interest in beige, and the standard colors WH offers didn't appeal to me. The plan was just that we would have everything painted white and I (along with some wonderful friends) would paint after the house was done. Kasey suggested that I talk with the painter about upgrading the paint directly with him and working out a deal. We did indeed work out a deal using 3 colors throughout the house. I'll paint the boys' bathroom and our mudroom myself, and they're handling the rest. More about paint in a bit.

The finish carpenters were there bright and early Monday morning- before I left for work around 7:30. When I got home I walked in and saw this:

We have cabinets!! Love the color! I picked based on a sample door at the WH office, so I'm glad they're this beautiful!

I'm a little concerned about the sink base working with my Ikea sink, but I'm certain the carpenters can handle it. All of the cabinets have a sliding tray instead of a shelf, so no more lost items in the back!

When I turned around I saw our stairs- love this, too! The railing will be stained to match the cabinets. Today also marks the end of the scooters in the house, as there are entirely too many things that can go wrong. Oh well, they'll always have the basement. (Okay- not true. They'll have the basement until we move in. Then too bad for them.)

A long time ago I showed you the colors we were thinking about based on the Sherwin-Williams paint deck at the WH office. Unfortunately the painter uses a different brand. Now, one would think it would be easy to find comparable colors in another line. Not so. The grey wasn't bad. The blue? Impossible. I'm not exaggerating. After collecting hundreds of paint chips (also not an exaggeration) I had it narrowed down to 2. Samples in hand I painted my board. One was too dark, and one was too light. I liked the dark one a lot, but it looked a little purpley. (Little known fact- when you write a blog you can make up words!) In different light it looked blue. See what I mean??

Remember how I mentioned my sons were sick? Well, they were kind enough to pass their illnesses on to me. I had a lovely cold from M, which made the strep from J that much more miserable. Coughing and sneezing with strep? Not fun. I was out of commission for the better part of last week. As a sign of how awful I felt, I didn't go to the site until Thursday. Thursday! I have a rough idea of when things happened, but I'm mostly going off of photos B took for me.

Since our basement is pretty large I got a 65 pint. I had done some research online, and the brand Menards carries got decent reviews, so that was that. Could I have gotten a cheaper one? Probably. But I didn't want to wait, and I like buying from a physical store so if there are issues I'm dealing with people face to face. So far the dehumidifier is working well. At first we didn't have a hose for it, so B would go down 3-4 times a day to empty it. As you can imagine, that got old so he hooked up a garden hose that runs directly into the sump pump. We have it running continuously, and the humidity it down to 80% or so. After it comes down enough we can set the desired humidity and it'll kick in whenever needed.

The trencher came to install the electric lines. It looks like we had a severe mole problem, but I'm glad it got done so quickly. When I met with the engineer I made it clear how unhappy I was with our experience, and he's making good on his promise to speed things up. So much so that within a few days the electric company guy was out to hook up the permanent electric. The only downside was that the initial engineer had me buy a $35 connector, because he said they couldn't hook in without it. Since we didn't know when they were coming I left it for him by the meter. In the dirt. In keeping with my experience with the electric company, guess who now has a $35 door stop?

Well, two things. One being a tornado. The other being a sick child. M was up all night with a horrible earache. And I do mean all night, which means I was up with him. Then a little before noon the school nurse called to tell me J had a fever and needed to be picked up ASAP. It's fun being a mommy!

The upshot being that I didn't get to the build until late afternoon. First I saw this:

The laundry room wall is being corrected. This made me happy.

But then I saw this:
I thought perhaps the fact that I left towels on top of the water from yesterday would have tipped them off. It did not. There's mudd all over the place, and torn tape all over the floor. WH has a policy of cleaning up after yourself. Now, all of the other contractors have followed this. Unfortunately I'm going to have to bring this up to Kasey. It's driving me a wee bit crazy.

There was a bright spot in that the stone is coming right along, and we're getting more of it. It's going all the way to the ground. Yea!

Today was a day of highs and lows. I met with electric company engineer #2 to figure out where the line should run. Again. He took one look at the flags B had put out and said “No. That won’t do.” And we were off and running! I was very nice, but firm as I explained that yes, I realized it wasn’t ideal, but a straight shot from the electric pole to the house would run right through our leach field. Obviously there needed to be a turn. B went through all this with engineer #1 last month, who apparently didn’t listen. So I told #2 about our whole experience thus far.

Once #2 realized not only did I know what I was talking about, but that I was highly annoyed this whole thing has been a mess from the beginning, he changed his tune. He ran some figures and gave me a total. I knew that we had written a check last month, but couldn’t remember what it included. So I wrote him another one on the spot to expedite installation. (Remember when I told you to set aside a lot of extra money? This is why.) In the end, #2 ended up checking things out back at the office. We had indeed already paid for the service, but it was a lesser amount as it was based on a direct line. #2 decided to eat the cost and shredded my check. That was a step in the right direction for service recovery. But I’m not going to be completely satisfied until our permanent power is up and running.

Another low came as I was walking around the house measuring walls & windows so I can work on furniture placement & window coverings. I was in the laundry room and noticed the wall the W&D are on looked awfully shallow. It was not quite 2 feet deep, and our W&D are 33” deep. That would have landed the edge right in the middle of the door to the half-bath. I had just finished texting Kasey when he pulled up to the job site. Excellent timing! We took a look, and he assured me that it wouldn’t be a problem to move the doorway. If something like this is going to happen, this is the time to catch and fix it.

I don’t know if it’s the worst, but certainly the most annoying thing about today was the mess the tape/mud guys left. They came in just as I was leaving around 11:15 so I didn’t see them working. I got back around 3 and went in to check out their progress. The entire house was taped and mudded. I’m assuming there are more steps to this process, so I’ll reserve any comments on workmanship. But I will complain about the mess they left behind. There are dollops of mud all over the floors- I’m hoping it's still there because it's easier to clean up when it’s dry. This mess, however, made me livid!

I don’t know how well you can see, but there was a giant puddle of standing water right in the middle of what will be my family room floor. I understand a lot of water is used to mix the mud. But standing water on OSB is NOT a good thing! I immediately went home to get a towel to sop it up.

In spite of those rough spots, there were a few highs to balance them out. The well was drilled this morning, and they hit great water 15 feet down. Unfortunately the law says they had to go deeper. In the end we have good water- no iron, sulfur- so I’m happy.
Today the drywall and stone crews were hard at work. I stopped by around 11 then at 3. The stone guys were there after 5, and the drywall crew didn't leave until after 7! I haven't been back tonight, but the drywall should all be up. That's quite a process. Each board is glued then screwed in place. It's not going anywhere.
This afternoon B staked out the location for the well as the digger is coming out in the morning. Here's hoping he doesn't have to go too terribly deep to hit good water! We're putting the well semi close to the house around back so I can camouflage it in a flower bed. Well, when I get around to landscaping. Someday.

The electric company is also coming in the morning. Well, not the whole company, nor the cast of the TV show (but that would be awesome!), but the guy who figures out where to trench the line. He'd been out before, but it was the first week we broke ground. That was a tad premature. Didn't have a lot of faith in the EC at that point. Anyway, the permanent electric should be in soon.

That leaves septic, which should be early May, and propane, which should also be in early May. If you're building in the country, make sure you think about all of these "extra" things!! The cost really adds up quickly!

Our conversation would go like this:

M: So what's going on?
B: The siding guys just got here.
M: TAKE A PICTURE!

M: So what's going on now?
B: They're starting on the stone.
M: TAKE A PICTURE!
He's been very patient, but I know he's thrilled that I have the day off tomorrow. I'm thrilled, too! The workers? Probably won't be so thrilled. Although I did meet the stone guys, and they were very nice. R asked me what I thought and I said "I'm giddy like a little schoolgirl!" Yep. I actually said that to a complete stranger. That's how much I love the stone!
I assumed that the stone was some kind of prefab slab, but it's real stone, pieced together like a giant puzzle.
After we insulated the garage Saturday we had almost two rolls of insulation left over. We walked through the house to see if there was someplace we could use it. There's a wall between the family room and J's bedroom that could use some soundproofing in case we're out there watching tv after the boys' bedtime. While we were at it we decided to do also insulate the wall between the living room and M's bedroom. Pretty much any kind of soundproofing we could do between the boys' rooms and the rest of the house is a good thing.

So once again I schlepped to Menards for insulation. But this time I knew exactly what I needed. Once again we threw child labor laws to wind and put our kids to work.
Every time I have to leave for the day I feel like I'm missing out. Fortunately not too much happened today. But what did happen was very exciting- the drywall was delivered! As much as my husband hates taking pictures, he did indulge me and took these:
It never would have occurred to me that they took the drywall in through the front door. It makes sense- I had just never thought about it. After seeing these sheets up close I understand why they wanted to get as close as possible. They are huge!
Remember that west wind I talked about? It was in full force Monday. It was so bad that it knocked the port-o-john over! And moved it about 10 feet! X marks what used to be the spot. I wasn't about to go near it. B is a good guy, so he put it back where it belongs and cleaned it up. That, my friends, is the hallmark of a good man!
